     If using Vista, or 7.. It is safe to join said network, but make sure to use the "public" setting. It will hide all your files and identity and others will not be able to access them. But as with any public network, I would avoid making purchases or anything that you have to enter card numbers, names, or SSN's.

     I had no idea dial up even still existed. Even at the crappiest speeds from that open network, it will be better than dial up!

   We currently use T-Mobile as a wireless provider. We travel a lot in Washington, Oregon and Idaho and frequently get "No Service" when we're not on an Inter-State freeway.      You can. There are wireless routers that work with a sim card (the same ones used as the mobile phones and Ipads).

     Or, with a little patience and research, you could do it with a pc or laptop, but that is another story.

   My College has a very fast internet service, but it's only if you are using the comuters that are networked in the campus!      That's probably because too many people are using the wireless at the same time. Wireless response deteriorates non-linear, so doubling the users may increase delays by 3 or 4 times instead of just double. If there are 10 or 20 people using that wireless, then get used to the slow response....

     It depends on how fast a speed you need. If you're happy with less than 1 Mb, go with your phone company's DSL. If you need more than 1 Mb like I do for my internet-fed TV service (like Sky Angel), then go with your cable provider. But have them run a test first to see what speed they can actually send to your place, before you pay for the hookup!

     You don't want to be paying for a speed they can't actually send to you. Some companies will charge you for a speed you requested, even if they're not capable of delivering that speed to your location.

     The faster the speed, the more it will cost you. Good luck!

      If it has wi-fi then follow these instructions.
      First, Go to Connect to or Control Panel it should take you to internet connections. Then, make it search for any connections surrounding your area all you need now is connect to it if it doesnt ask for encryption. If it ask for encryptions type in the password for it and let it automatically remember you. Set up the connection you established as your deafult so everytime you can connect to that connection.

      What you need is a signal booster, you install it in your house and it will improve reception for your cell phone. I don't think it's guaranteed to work though, it will be dependant on the general signal level outside your home and a few other variables (that are mostly out of your control).

      The only way to know if it will work, is probably to try it yourself (maybe you can return it if it doesn't work?). Some signal boosters for CDMA networks (ie: Verizon):

    What happens if I cancel Verizon Wireless service when it switches to month-to-month?
    My current 2yr contract with Verizon Wireless will end soon, and I was told by customer representative that it will automatically turn to month-to-month if I do not renew the contract. Is that true? If so, what would happen if I cancel the service during the "month-to-month" term? Will I be refunded with a pro-rated service fee, or, will I be charged for the full month?

      The easiest thing to do is to cancel as of the last day of the billing cycle. If you cancel before that, they will tell you that they will bill you through the end of the billing cycle and then you have to demand a supervisor and make threats and all that noise. Save yourself the headache and cancel as of the last day of the billing cycle.

      First, you need an Ethernet cable. Take the Ethernet cable, and plug it into your modem, and the other end goes into the Internet port in your wireless router. In your wireless router, you will see ports labeled LAN1, LAN2, LAN3, and LAN4. Those are for other computers that you want to have Internet. That cable coming from your modem to the Internet port in your router is the source for your wireless internet and the ports labeled LAN1, LAN2, LAN3, and LAN4. Your wireless router and modem are now setup for wireless internet access.

      Verizon phones don't have sim cards. If you have a verizonwireless.com account you can do it online. Just log in and go to upgrade phone, then select the "my own equipment" option. It will ask you to put in your ESN. You can find it underneath the battery.

      If that doesnt work just call (800) 922-0204 and just have them do it.

      Or go to a store and they can help you.

      It won't extend your contract.

      Also this is not why GSM is good. GSM phones can be easily stolen and someone can just slip their sim card in it and walk around with a free phone. With CDMA once it is stolen no one else can activate it.

      You can use a "bridge" WiFi adapter. That is, you can place a WiFi adapter with a directional antenna in one building pointed at the other that bridges the signal to the other. Frankly, I would use an AC (power) ethernet broadcaster. This permits you to connect two buildings together using nothing but the power drops.

      The YA User Luis (above) is incorrect. There is no such thing as Wi-fi service from cable/DSL ISP (Internet Service Provider).

      Connect one end of Ethernet patch cable to the modem and the other end to wireless router. Then after the modem and wireless router are setup and powered on, open your web browser and configure and secure the wireless router.

      Then follow these directions on how to secure your wireless signal so you and those you give permission can only access the wireless network.

      Probably not, you'd have to ask your dad or reset the password on the router. There's usually a red reset button on the back or bottom of the router. You might need a paperclip to push it in. It will reset your wireless router so there is no password and then you'd have to go back in and put one in.

      If I understand your question, you are asking how can connect to a wireless router that has the name (aka Service Set IDentifier or SSID) of NETGEAR. I'm guessing you went into the wireless connection wizard or something similar and saw that name in the list. Almost certainly, this is not a public wireless Internet service, but a wireless router that belongs to a neighbor as part of their Internet service. Unless your neighbor wants to sell you access to their connection (which they probably can't legally do), you need to get your own.

      When you sign up for cable, DSL or fiber Internet service, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) - Verizon DSL or Comcast Cable for example - will supply a modem and a router. That router generally have a built-in wireless capability as well as a wired ports for nearby computers. You would get your wireless service using that.

      Picture a donut placed over the antenna. The strongest signals are in the direction of the thickest part of the donut. Signals off the end of the antenna are just about non-existent. Try turning the antenna so your bedroom os on a line from the antenna through the thickest part of the donut (at right angles to the axis of the antenna). It costs nothing, the effort is minimal and you'll see the effect immediately. It may be all you need.

      If the signal is going through a large metal object (wall oven, refrigerator, etc.) it gets cut down a lot. Moving the router a foot or two may move the line of sight enough to double or triple the signal strength,

      With cell companies, you definitely get what you pay for.. T-Mobile is very cheap, but thats because they have the least network coverage out of the 4 major networks.. Verizon is among the most expensive, but its because they have the most coverage. They also always come first in any study or test or report done on wireless networks, for reliability, coverage, dropped calls, and overall quality. So it depends what's more important to you- price, or coverage. Here are the overall nationwide rankings for the 4 major carriers:

      Price (1 is cheapest) and coverage (1 is worst):

      1. T-Mobile
      2. Sprint
      3. ATT
      4. Verizon

      So it depends on whats more important to you- price or coverage, cuz you cant have both. Talk to family and friends to see what service they have and how well it works for them.

      NO it is NOT safe!! Do two things. Change the password on the router for login and either disable the wireless which you should be able to do on a Linksys, or set up some type of security. WPA is the best, with WEP or MAC filtering as a minimum.

      Your service is going to degrade greatly, irregardless of your wireless provider, if you go wireless from cable.

      You don't state why you want to go wireless over cable but, in my opinion, it's a real bad move. Especially for online gaming.

      Verizon always comes first in any study or report done on wireless networks as far as overall coverage, reliability, etc. And they have much more 3G coverage than ATT by far, as well as launching the first nationwide 4G network at the end of the year. And prices are 95% the same as ATT, too..

      The computer should be able to recognize when there is a wireless network available (without your having to hook it up into the wall). Usually, you just have to choose the network (not your DSL) account in your options menu or control panel/networks menu. The hotel will usually provide a password.

    I'm asking as I am the person in charge of the company's wireless bill. The wireless company has asked three times for a payment that they already received over a week ago. The account new was opened without our consent. I have spoke to the rep and him noted that the account was to be closed since customer did not authorize it. Now our rep has been removed from the account. I can get no one there to help resolve this issue and cannot set up new ligitimate service on our real account.

    Any ideas where to file a complaint? Their customer service department will not forward the complaint calls.

      Keep pushing the issue with them. If I were you I would call everyday. They want you to drop the ball so they can claim their fraudulent charges. Also keep records of all contact with them. If properly documented, you should have enough to contact the BBB or Attorney General's Office in your state.
